Hai, had learned to swim, surf, and scuba dive at an early age. His father was a Navy Admiral and Hai had enlisted in the Chinese Navy after college. He had quickly risen in the ranks to become the Captain of a nuclear submarine. Admiral Chén had a close friendship with Admiral Riguetti and his wife Rosa. They had been instrumental in assigning Hai to the newly commissioned research submarine, Discovery. Captain Chén’s career had been text-book perfect until fate intervened on one of his first missions with Riguetti.

In a cruel, life-altering twist, while exploring a radioactive fissure deep on the ocean bottom, Hai almost lost his life when his body chemistry was altered by the primordial energy spewing from the fissure. The accident left him with paranormal powers. He became an amphibian who could comfortably breathe underwater for hours. His skin, now gray in color, was dense and rough, like a shark’s. Hai gained incredible strength, more than enough to survive the crushing depths of the ocean.

His most unique gift is the ability to change his form while underwater. Whenever submerged in a body of water, Hai can transform at will to become a totally aquatic creature resembling a strange fusion of man and fish. He has remained on board the Discovery as her Captain, and is one of the most valuable members of the crew.
